ROBERT FREDERICK LUSSIER

Robert F. Lussier, local historian, avid gardener/outdoorsman and loving father, died April 9, 2017 at St. Monica Church on Palm Sunday on Mercer Island. Bob was born in Port Townsend, Washington on November 7, 1933. Bob attended Gonzaga University in Spokane. After two years at Gonzaga, he enlisted in the Army during the Korean War and earned the rank of Corporal as an intelligence specialist translating Morse code from German to English in Oberammergau. He then returned to Gonzaga and earned his teaching certificate. He taught in a small school in rural Spokane for a year. He then earned a Master of Arts in History before securing a job as the curator of the Museum of History and Industry in Seattle. The thirteen years he spent at MOHAI inspired his endeavor to research the maritime history of the Pacific Northwest.

Bob met Joanne Parker and they married in 1964 in West Seattle. Bob and Joanne were active in their church and raised seven children in the Maple Leaf neighborhood. Both had green thumbs and grew a large portion of the food that nourished the family. Bob also worked as a real estate broker and as a King County Metro coach operator, all while continuing his maritime research project. Bob served the community as precinct caucus chair, as president of the Czech Club, and volunteered at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

Bob is survived by his children; Robert (Karla), Anne Jewell, Paul, Joy Liechty (John), Benjamin (Ramona), Frederic (Allison) and Lily Lussier; grandchildren; Renee, Micah, Skyler, Jared, Freddy, Bobby, Maria, Sophia and Asher; great-grandchildren; Anastasia and Florentina; brother of Celia Rich and Arthur Lussier.

Preceded in death by his wife, Joanne; and his sister, Annette.
