RUTH MARGARET (HALE) COHN

Ruth Margaret (Hale) Cohn, devoted wife and beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away gracefully, with her sons at her bedside on May 23, 2018. She would have turned 98 years old in July.

Ruth was born on July 14, 1920 to Etta and Emmett Hale in Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1933, she met David Cohn, the love of her life and so began a relationship that to this day, remains eternal. Ruth and David were married on May 28, 1943 in Indianapolis, Indiana. During WWII, Ruth came to Seattle to care for her sister, who was ill. Ruth fell in love with the Seattle area. David and Ruth moved to Seattle in 1947 and to Mercer Island in 1949. Ruth remained on Mercer Island for sixty-seven years, raising her family and making many lifelong friends. She was the backbone of the family, maintaining the household and helping her husband David, as he started his restaurant business. Family was everything for Ruth and Ruth was deeply loved by her family. She always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. Over the years, Ruth supported numerous community organizations. Ruth volunteered for over fifteen years and countless hours at the Swedish Hospital Medical Center. She also helped those who lost their eyesight by transcribing books into Braille, using a Braille typewriter.

Ruth was preceded in death by her beloved husband David and her sisters Francis and Virginia. She is survived by her two sons: Steve (Laura) and Ron (Merideth); six grandchildren: Austin, Elliot, Garin, Evan, Rebecca, and Sarah, and six great grandchildren: Jael, Tallie, Ayden, Reece, Nash, and David. The Cohn Family would like to thank Ruth’s caregivers, Marizol Talmadge and Renata Mileske and the staff at the Bellitini for their loving care of Ruth over the past two and one-half years.

A Celebration of Ruth’s life is planned for Saturday, July 14th from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm at the Metropolitan Grill in the Chairman’s Room. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charity of your choice.
