Dan Grausz is our choice for reelection to the Mercer Island City Council. For issues large and small, he has shown himself to be a highly effective advocate for Mercer Island.
Mr. Grausz has been the lead architect in the fight to keep tolls away from I-90. At the Voters Forum held on Oct. 8, all of the candidates agreed that the current plan to fight tolling from a legal basis, and banding together with other communities, is the right approach.
His opponent says that any sort of compromise regarding tolling is wrong. Yet, Mr. Grausz has demonstrated that he knows how and when to negotiate. He weighs what is best for Islanders in the face of change or circumstance that may or may not be welcome, but always inevitable.
Mr. Grausz’s work as an attorney and part of a leadership team of a $5 billion corporation with 14,000 employees, 21 ocean-going vessels, cannot be ignored.
As such he has been involved in a vast array of complex issues regarding everything from labor issues to environmental regulations to the construction of new ships, often dealing with the unexpected.
He has used that expertise in ways favorable to the city. He works through differences and builds consensus. He helped make the Community Center happen. He has helped acquire land for parks and open space. His efforts to keep Youth Theatre Northwest on the Island are designed to help youth, but also to help integrate more of the arts into our city.
It is clear that he relishes solving problems as much as he cares for this community.
Mr. Grausz has been on the Council for 14 years. When City Manager Rich Conrad retires at year’s end, Mr. Grausz alone will hold the claim to institutional memory and experience on the City Council. Only a few senior staff at the city have been here longer.
Mr. Grausz is engaged and confident. He does not suffer fools gladly. But he does listen. He has a sense of humor and — a sense of how to get things done. We are glad to have someone with his presence, smarts and tenacity to work for us.
