Thumbs up for park, Eastside district, fundraising efforts

Thumbs up to those of you who took the time to attend public meetings, e-mail or write letters to the city on an issue that greatly affects Mercer Island: Luther Burbank Park. Attendance increased at each of the three meetings regarding the park's future held since November, showing the level of interest in the park and its importance. It is clearly more beneficial and constructive to the outcome of the park to get involved now rather than after plans have already been set and begun. The opinions that citizens expressed should be reflected in an eventual master plan for the park, which will head to the City Council later this year for approval.

Thumbs up to a King County Council committee for unanimously approving a redistricting plan that keeps Mercer Island as part of an Eastside district. Two of the four proposed plans for redrawing county council districts lumped the Island with Seattle. The final plan, approved this week, includes Mercer Island as part of the 6th District, along with Bellevue and Kirkland.

Thumbs up for all of the fundraising around the Island for victims of the tsunami that devastated South Asia in December. Students are raising money in creative ways, from bake sales to garage sales to selling hand warmers at the Park and Ride. Islanders as young as 4 years old are getting in on the relief effort. Adults are doing what they can, too, with the latest effort of a swing dance benefit at the VFW Hall from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Jan. 29. For more information, please call 230-4131.
