Protesters use free speech for disrespect
We are extremely fortunate to live in a country where free speech is a constitutional right. Some people, however, feel this right gives them license to be uncivil. Once a month, or so, a group of individuals stands in front of the post office protesting the current administration. Their signs have a photo of President Obama with a Hitleresque mustache drawn on his upper lip. I find this graphic so profoundly offensive that I am unable to bring myself to find out what their real message is.
I would challenge any member of our society to say that they have not been in some way touched by racial hatred, whether directly or indirectly, whether within their own family or through close personal friends. Hitler demonstrated the devastating consequences of escalating racial hatred. Unfortunately, in our own community, we have recently witnessed the potential for greater damage when we and our children don’t actively carry the memory of history inside ourselves.
These individuals who may have very valid reasons for disagreeing with our current administration are showing great disrespect to our society and themselves by expressing their disagreement in such a repulsively offensive way. Whether or not we agree with the politics of the current administration, it is incumbent on us as a community to let these people know that the graphic and superficial language they use to protest our president is unacceptable. We need to also let our children know why it is unacceptable so that they can learn to be civil citizens.
