Letter | Great city, school district should have pool

A really great city and school district like we have here on Mercer Island should have a pool for the high school and a public community pool.  I’m guessing we can’t afford that, but it would be a shame to lose even the shared space that we have right now with the Mary Wayte Pool.  My children learned to swim there and they have enjoyed participating in both the public swim time and the Riptides program.  I use the pool to swim laps for exercise and when my mother visited a few years back we took advantage of the shallow water aerobics classes.  It would be a huge loss to our community if this resource is allowed to disappear.  I would encourage both the City Council and the School Board to continue exploring options and eventually (soon!) offer our community the chance to vote on a proposal to fund a new or refurbished public pool.
