Letters to the Editor

Letter | Afghanistan — why are we there?

President Bush (the second) says because the Taliban is there. Actually the Taliban is in many countries, including the United States. Our presence there is costing us billions of dollars plus the loss of too many American young men.

Many have tried including Alexander the Great, who conquered the known world, except for Afghanistan. Genghis Khan, who did the same as Alexander, and also failed in Afghanistan. Tamerlane with the same results. Babur the same results. Persia the same results. England, and Russia the same failures. And now the United States. Why?

Countries that do not learn from history don’t have a promising future, as history has shown us.

How to get out? Remember the great French diplomat — Andre Malroux, when asked how the United States could win in Vietnam (another war we lost), said, “Tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. just say ‘we won’ and go home.” We could do that with Afghanistan!
