Letter | Hurricane Irene flood victims need help
September 19, 2011 · 1:24 PM
Upon recently returning from Sharon, Vermont, where my family was personally affected by Hurricane Irene, I knew I needed to take some kind of action. Ironically, I ran into a former co-worker and she had no clue about the devastation in Vermont or of our personal loss. I am writing in hopes of sparking local interest in helping out another small community where many families have lost their homes and property. As much as we hope FEMA and other agencies can help, the reality is, outside help is a must. After spending several days in Vermont, I am coming back in shock due to the devastation and loss. We lost our mobile home park, leaving all of the families who lived there homeless. Because we did not lose our primary home, we will not get any help from FEMA or insurance. It’s just amazing how an “act of God” and flooding allows the insurance companies a big out, leaving many helpless and hopeless.
We have been residents of Mercer Island for over 12 years and know that our small community has a big heart and can make a difference. We are blessed in so many ways; won’t you bless a small town in Vermont?
