Letter | Islanders should have a say on the ‘road diet’
June 6, 2012 · Updated 10:34 AM
I am in full agreement with Robert Andrews, who wrote to protest the ‘road diet.’ This should be a referendum.
We should not be encouraging more bicycle riders on the Island. Just live off of West Mercer Way and see how much these hobby riders endanger themselves and drivers every single day. It takes a South-ender twice as long to get off or on the Island and home because of bikers. And they are ever increasing. Mercer Island’s hilly terrain may be “scenic” but does not allow for safe driving with the continuous obstacles of more and more bike traffic. And the city wants to encourage more? This is not being green; it is being very shortsighted!
