Letter | Invest in youth, Boys & Girls Club Phone-a-Thon this week

March 10, 2013 · Updated 1:27 PM

This is a call for Mercer Island residents to invest in Mercer Island and our youth. The Mercer Island Boys & Girls Club is a vital community asset, and we rely on donor support.

We hope readers will answer the call. One of our major fundraising programs is our Phone-a-Thon. This year’s Phone-a-Thon began Tuesday, March 12, and continues Wednesday and Thursday evenings, March 13-14.

Investment highlights from 2012: Over 2,000 members; child care; 125 boys and girls in after-school care; 100 boys and girls in summer camps; social; an average of 400 teens in attendance at 10 middle school dances; nearly 70 youth in teen programs; Battle of the Bands with five Mercer Island bands competing in 2012; athletics; 700 boys and girls playing baseball and softball; 550 boys and girls playing basketball; 250 boys and girls playing soccer; nearly 60 girls playing volleyball; 180 boys playing football.

Did you know that MIBGC provided over $60,000 in scholarships in 2012? Not everyone can afford our programs, and community donations help us make the club accessible to more kids.

Have you visited PEAK? We enjoy a 41,300-square-foot, state-of-the-art clubhouse, with dedicated space for teens and child care, a recording studio and a gym with four basketball courts.

Here is another way to look at the Mercer Island Boys & Girls Club. When school is out and your kids are away from home, the club is there to provide them with a safe place for sports, fun and friends.

Thanks to our generous donors, our fantastic staff and our volunteer coaches, committee members and board, who make all this happen.

There are many ways to contribute. All you have to do is answer the call.

Jason A. Farber

President, Mercer Island Boys & Girls Club Advisory Board
