Letter | Big trucks unsafe at any speed on East Mercer Way

On Tuesday, May 14, a large dump truck with a secondary load attached by the very long and low trailer hitch overturned on East Mercer Way. This truck carved out a deep gouge in the hillside on the north side of the roadway, where the bicycle and pedestrian path is located. The accident occurred on one of the numerous sharp curves along East Mercer Way. Fortunately, there were no bicyclists, pedestrians, joggers or children using the bicycle path. These bicycle paths get a lot of use on a daily basis. If anyone had been using the path in the vicinity of this accident, there would have been a fatality! The combination truck carved its way into the hillside, before overturning.

It is my suggestion to the City Council members that an ordinance be passed banning these dual trailer loaded trucks from East/West Mercer Way. There is no way that these monster vehicles can safely navigate the sharp curves on these roads. If action is not taken, I believe that it is only a matter of time before a fatal accident will result. No person walking or bicycling on that curve would have had a chance of surviving that accident.
