On Sept. 17, 2013, I received, under the letterhead of “Council Member Debbie Bertlin” and “State Representative and Councilmember Tana Senn,” a letter to “Women of Mercer Island.”
In one-and-a-half pages, Bertlin and Senn applaud fellow Councilmember, Dan Grausz. A color photo even features the three of them in a cozy pose. Bertlin and Senn state, without Grausz’s “encouragement and support, we might not now be on the Council.” Further, Grausz compliments and accolades and some negative comments about Grausz’s opponent follow that statement. The letter concludes with their plea to “keep Dan on the Council.”
Endorsements for a candidate are not unusual. In fact, state legislative representative Judy Clibborn, a pro-tolling advocate, and others, endorse Councilman Grausz.
However, the Bertlin and Senn endorsement letter and accompanying envelope with their names displayed give the impression that their endorsement is one done on their own initiative and at their own expense. Yet, if one uses a magnifying glass, down at the bottom of the letter’s second page, it reads, “Paid for by the Dan Grausz Re-Election Committee.”
