Cats can damage the Island

It is encouraging to read over 100 sustainable city government practices posted on the city’s Web site. I feel there is, however, an obvious and huge problem which has been overlooked. Many Islanders allow their pet cats to run loose outdoors. These cats, which are a non-native, invasive species, do much damage when they slaughter native birds and small mammals, sometimes wiping out an entire bird population.

Hopefully, persons on the task force, The Green Ribbon Commission, will research this problem and will encourage, through education, Islanders owning cats to keep their cats indoors. Cats should not be allowed to wreak havoc on the environment.
