Council shouldn’t spend money for problem cyclists
February 24, 2009 · Updated 4:41 PM
I am extremely dismayed that the City Council is contemplating spending $500,000 to narrow Island Crest Way to three lanes just to accommodate the cyclists. I live off of West Mercer Way, and I travel on Island Crest Way to and from work during the week and also on most weekends. The new Merrimount/Island Crest Way intersection/configuration does not pose any problems for me.
Island Crest Way is the busiest road on the Island, and we definitely need four lanes. Furthermore, the cyclists create horrendous problems on West Mercer Way because they ride two and three abreast, and many of the cyclists are downright rude! We do not need to replicate these same problems and frustrations on Island Crest Way, especially since a majority of the cyclists do not even live on the Island. Most importantly, we do not need to spend $500,000 during this recession to accommodate cyclists. Give the $500,000 to the Mercer Island School District so we can retain teachers; your priorities are in the wrong place.
