Aside from the fact that we have known Dave Myerson for over 15 years as a compassionate parent, community member and highly respected medical colleague, we endorse Dave because he will bring to the School Board the necessary recipe of passion, critical analysis, the keen ability to research and draw conclusions based on both data and intuition, and a healthy dose of skepticism for the comforts of the status quo. As a scientist, he is a great listener and fully respects other opinions, but he will also proceed with inquiry and substantiation. For example, unlike some parents who went with their intuition in supporting Gary Plano as superintendent, Dave Myerson spent one Saturday afternoon in Starbucks reading Mr. Plano’s 150-page doctoral thesis on the effect of intervention on student attitudes and achievement in an algebra course. Lastly, Dave Myerson strongly supports the 2020 Vision and the goal of “personalized learning,” and he will be effective in providing ideas and direction. He possesses the experience to review other schools’ data and experiences, to analyze the Island’s 2020 Vision. We encourage the community to read Dave’s “Issues Blog” on his Web site, www.dave4mi.com, to get a sense of his healthy perspective on education. We strongly support Dave Myerson’s candidacy for the Mercer Island School Board.
