Thank you for holding the public brainstorming session on May 1. It is exciting to learn of the opportunities (and challenges) facing MISD facilities in the coming years. Following that and having read the follow-up Reporter articles, I do wish to clarify an item that may also suggest a shift in mindset regarding several of the North Mercer campus tenants.

During the meeting itself as well as in the Reporter, Pixie Hill was referred to as a “day care.” In fact, Pixie is a state licensed preschool that has taught young children since 1953, making it one of the most established preschools on the Island. Our teachers and board (of which I am a member) have always valued academics. If you are curious to refer to our Web site’s academic page, it can be found at: www.pixiehill.org/Academics.html.

The reason I suggest this is an important distinction is that as early learning grows in importance and priority at the state level, my hope is that MISD will also recognize its value. I think it’s so important for Islanders to recognize that preschools are not just “day care”; rather, programs such as ours prepare young children to be academically, socially and emotionally ready for kindergarten in our MISD elementaries.
