Mercer Island FC 14U girls win U.S. Starfire Championship | Sports brief

The MIFC girls 14U select soccer team won its third tournament title of the year, winning the 2010 U.S. Club Starfire Cup on Nov. 21 in Tukwila.

The tournament features teams from across the Pacific Northwest, including the top teams from Washington, Idaho, British Columbia and the Puget Sound’s Premier League’s Super League.

In five games the Islanders were undefeated, allowing just one goal the entire tournament.

The team from Mercer Island faced the Boise Nationals Alemania Premier team in the finals, but though Boise controlled the game from the beginning, but the Islanders were able to hold them off. The game went into a shootout to decide the match. Goalie Anna Weiss made two saves during the shootout to give the Islanders the win.

The team has also won the Nike Crossfire Select Cup and the Sky River Tournament this summer. The team is currently in first place in its division.

The team includes: June Kissel, Joelle Antilla, Gabriella Venditti, Lydia Venditti, Sarah Walters, Ashlyn Reid, Olivia Snell, , Kelly Devine, Ellie Giampapa, Katherine Vetter, Amanda Tsang, Marissa Tuttle-Roache, Adrienne Suhm and Megan Diamond, Annalise Weiss and Hannah Paborsky and Catherine Seifert. They are coached by Bryan Mazza and assistant coach Reed Atkin.
