Mercer Island High School rower heads to Yale
Next fall Elizabeth Vincent will join a small, but dedicated group of people: Islanders who row at the collegiate level. In fact, Vincent is the second in her family after older brother Matthew, headed to Harvard for a spot on the crew team there.
Vincent is one of eight who will join the Yale crew team next fall.
Yale women’s head crew coach Will Porter said the group of recruits was exactly what the program needs.
“This is a good class,” Porter said in a press release. “They are exactly what we are looking for — great students, committed to Yale, passionate about rowing, eager to get better as athletes and as people. Eager to go fast. You gotta love it!”
Vincent has rowed for the Mt. Baker Crew team, based in Seattle. During her high school career she competed and trained against the German Junior National team, attended the 2009 and 2010 U.S. junior national team selection camp and was a 2009 champion at the Brentwood Regatta in the varsity 4’s and took silver in the 8’s.
She said Yale was one of her top three choices, along with Harvard and Princeton.
“When I visited (Yale), I really liked the housing and I fit in with the school and the team,” she said. “Plus it’s a very strong academic and athletic school.”
Vincent joined the Mt. Baker Crew team when she was in eighth grade, rowing with them ever since.
Three of the Yale recruits, including Vincent, are from the West Coast, while four hail from the East Coast.
In her last few months as a member of the Mt. Baker team, Vincent said she hopes to place well again at the regional competition this spring and qualify for nationals in the summer.
Other Mercer Island natives who are members of college crew teams include: Michael Wales, a 2010 Seattle Prep graduate, who now rows for Harvard with Matthew Vincent. Cole Johnson, a 2010 MIHS grad, rows for Stanford, while Marguerite Skinner Brown, who went to Lakeside, rows at Princeton and Jennifer Travis, a 2010 Islander grad, is on the team at the University of San Diego team.
