Mercer Island gymnastics finishes seventh at state

The Mercer Island gymnastics team finished the 3A state competition Friday night in seventh place. The Islanders earned a 159.175 score during the meet at the Tacoma Dome. Kamiakin was first with a 174.275 team score.
In the all-around competition Vanessa Gaffney finished in 21st place, her teammate Kari Johnson was 27th and Kristin Trubmle took 48th place.
In the bars competition Gaffney tied for 15th place with Javiera Sobarzo from Holy Names. Johnson tied for 28th place.
Johnson also earned a 30th place tie on the beam, while Gaffney finished in 47th place.
In the floor competition, Ganney was 29th overall. On the vault, Johnson tied for 23rd and Gaffney was 29th.
The team finished the season as the district champions, and the second place team in KingCo.
