In a game that was much closer on the field than on the score board, the Mercer Island soccer team earned a convincing 8-1 win over Juanita on Tuesday evening.
The first half opened strong for the Islanders, with Alex Wood's first goal of the night off an assist from Jordan Morris less than a minute into the match. Wood would go on to add two more for Mercer Island during the game.
Juanita Nick Horne scored in the eighth minute of the match to the tie game momentarily at 1-1. But Mercer Island quickly regain their score board control, adding five more to end the first half with a 6-1 lead thanks to goals from Wood, Jack Michale and Morris.
The Rebels kept pace with Mercer Island in the second half, earning shooting chances and lengthy possessions, but in the 59 minute Levi Kloss, assisted by Matt Grohnke, found the net, followed moments later by Wood's third goal of the night, assisted by Morris. Morris got his second of the game, assisted by Woody Jacobson in the 75 minute.
The Islanders are currently 7-2-2 overall this season with a 6-1-2 record in league. They sit in the No. 2 spot in KingCo behind Sammamish, a team with a perfect 9-0 record. Juanita is 1-10 this year overall.
