Islander earns lacrosse honor

Mercer Island native Catherine La Plant was recently named the WCLA Division II rookie of the year.

La Plant is a defender for Chapman University, and graduated from Mercer Island in 2010.

The team went on to win the tournament, beating Towson University, of Maryland, 9-8 in the championship to win the national title. Chapman was undefeated in its regular season.

The finals were held in Scottsdale, Ariz., where the team played three games in 100-degree weather to earn the title.
