Mercer Islanders at Hoopfest

Several teams from Mercer Island made the trek to the annual Spokane Hoopfest competition in late June.
From Mercer Island, five teams earned first place finishes in their brackets, while another three took second overall.
Finishing in first place in the adults division was Toms Short Bus, with recent Mercer Island High School grads Quinn Sterling, Andrew Smith, Derek Newhof and Brenden Westendorf.
Eastside Energy, of girls entering eighth grade, won with Islanders Jessica Blakeslee and Taylor Krause. The Islanderz team, a coed group going into the ninth grade, won with Olivia Snell, Megan Diamond, Brandon Lawler and Michael Bantle.
The Islanders Three G team of Alex Arron, Tyler Butson, David Pickles and Parker Schally took the third-grade boys bracket with a perfect 5-0 record. The Bro Ballers team of boys going into ninth grade, including Nick Taylor and Evan Shaddle, won their bracket.
Second-place finishers included the Islander Girls team, all going into the sixth grade: Maeve Akins, Clairs Mansfield, Macy Mounger and Jessie Stenberg. The MI Skittles team of Abby Olson, Leah Akins, Candace Rawson and Grace Thomas won the eighth-grade girls bracket. The team of MI Red, which will be going into the fifth grade, included Matthew Nguyen, Jack Moffit, Cole Miller and Robert Dreyer.
