The Benson soccer team, with players from Mercer Island, took the top spot in the Dana Cup, a tournament in Denmark for U14 girls teams.
Teams from 25 countries participated in the tournament. To take the title, the team from the United States beat teams from Sweden, Norway, Denmark and the U.S. The team allowed no goals and won the final over a team from California, 1-0.
The team, which consists of girls from Washington, is coached by Rusty Williams. Katie Bernardez and Piper Casey are both eighth-graders who live on Mercer Island.
The team also played in the Gothia Cup in Sweden, part of the world’s biggest youth soccer tournament, with over 75 different countries participating.
