The Mercer Island sixth grade girls select basketball team won it's second Newport Cold Turkey basketball tournament held during Thanksgiving weekend.

The Mercer Island sixth grade girls select basketball team won it's second Newport Cold Turkey basketball tournament held during Thanksgiving weekend.

The team, coached by James "LJ" Johnson, beat Auburn-Riverside and Issaquah early in the tournament. The team faced Skyline in the semifinals, and after a early lead, Skyline closed the gap but the Islanders held on for the win.

The title game was against Newport, which the Islanders won 38-25. It's the second straight Cold Turkey tournament win for the team.

The team includes: Claire Mansfield, Annie Medlock, Aolani Calderon, Kelly Behrbaum, Macy Mounger, Ali Kimball, Katie Brodsky, Tessa Guerra, Jessie Stenberg and Maeve Akins.
