Mercer Island boys pick up first win of season | Prep basketball results

In the first game of the newly minted basketball season, the Mercer Island boys beat Eastlake 60-49.

The teams started the evening out with a tied first quarter, matching 12-12 before Eastlake took a lead at half time 29-26. But in the third quarter the Islanders held the Wolves to 10 points while scoring 19 of their own to retake the game, solidifying things in the fourth quarter with another 15 points to Eastlake 10.

Kaleb Warner had the team high with 16 points, while Joe Rasmussen added 13 to the tootle. Nick Nordale had 11 points of his own, followed by senior Brian Miller's seven, Sam Cohn's four and four by Karsten Sherman. Justen Altaras had three and Jake Shaddle added two.

The Mercer Island girls traveled to Newport for their first non-conference game of the season, losing 47-44 to the 4A team.

The opponents remained close through the first quarter, which ended with a 9-7 score for the Knight, but Newport pulled way in the second quarter scoring 16 points to the Islanders eight.

After halftime the Islander offense scored 14 points, for a 33-29 game. Mercer Island edged out Newport in the fourth quarter scoring, going 15-14 but it wasn't enough to earn the overall win.

Both teams travel to Mount Si Friday evening for a quad basketball event. The girls game begins at 6:30 p.m. while the boys tip off at 8 p.m.
