Island wrestler wins league title

Donnie Howard, a sixth grader at St. Monica School, but competes with the Islander Middle School wrestling team. He also competes with the Eastside Wrestling Club.

Howard finished his sixth grade season for IMS with undefeated and won the league championship. In club wrestling he has placed first in three tournaments this winter.

During the Oregon Classic Wrestling tournament in Bend, Ore. held Jan. 13 through Jan. 15 he finished second in his division and weight group novice 120 pounds. At the tournament he won four matches, losing one in the final seconds of the match.

The Oregon Classic is one of the country's largest wrestling events, featuring over 1,000 wrestlers. To enter the tournament, wrestlers must qualify by placing in the top three at special qualifying tournaments.

During the last weekend of January, Howard headed to Spokane to compete in the Washington state wrestling championships.
