The Mercer Island fourth-grade girls select basketball team recently won the Rotary Winter Championships.

The team, going into the tournament at the end of March, was ranked No. 1, and in the semifinals the Islanders beat the Rainier Vista Silver Stars. Then the team took on the Rotary Lady Ballers, the team which had given the Islanders their only loss earlier in the season.

During the rematch, Mercer Island had the early lead, but the Lady Ballers came back to within two points going into the fourth quarter. But the Islanders took care of business in the fourth, with full court press and several steals to take the 28-21 win.
