Mercer Island dominates Sammamish | Girls prep soccer

The Mercer Island girls soccer team dominated in their win over Sammamish on Tuesday, Oct. 9. The Islanders logged the team’s eighth shut out of the season, beating the Totems 7-0.

The first 10 minutes of the game included the first three goals for Mercer Island, with Laura Harrison scoring off an assist from Marissa Hammerstrom in the second minute of the match. Hammerstrom scored in the fifth minute, assited by what would be the first of four assists for Katherine Vetter. In the eighth minute Hammerstrom scored again, this time assisted by Katie Rorem.

Amanda Wall was the next Islander to hit the mark, assised by Vetter in the 20th minute, followed by Emily Lightfoot in the 36th minute, again assisted by Vetter. Joelle Antilla scored in the 56th minute, assisted by Julia Meade and the final point of the night belonged to Katie Markin, assisted by Vetter in the 75th minute.

“The kids are playing really well,” said head coach Terry Ryan. The team is 10-0-1 overall and 8-0-1 in KingCo. The Islanders have not allowed a goal since the Sept. 20 game against Juanita.

“The kids are working so hard and it’s nice to see the scoring spread around. They are really working as a team,” said the coach.

Hammerstrom leads the lead with nine goals this season and four assists, Goalie Corey Goelz has eight shutouts, the highest in the league. Liberty has the second most with five.

The Islanders will travel to Interlake on Thursday, Oct. 11 for a 7:30 p.m. game.
