In Mercer Island’s final home game of the regular season, Bellevue won in a shutout. The final score was 42-0.
It’s the first time in six years the Islanders have not scored at all during a game. In 2007 against Newport, the Islanders lost 38-0.
The game started with an 89-yard run by Budda Baker with 3:07 on the clock in the first quarter. The Wolverines hit the end zone on the team’s first play of the game, but was called back due to a holding call.
Just minutes later, with 11:08 on the clock in the beginning of the second quarter, Bellevue scored the second touchdown of the night, this time a 58-yard run by Max Richmond for the 14-0 lead.
After halftime, Bellevue’s John Nguyen scored the first of his three touchdowns in the third quarter with 10:16 on the clock after a 36-yard run. His second of the night came off a 3-yard run with 7:34 left in the quarter, followed by the third, a 2-yard run with 2:50 left.
Bellevue led 35-0 at the end of the third quarter.
Mercer Island held off the Wolverines advances until 5:49 in the fourth quarter, when Mustafa Branch hit the mark off a 5-yard run.
Bellevue had a total of 393 yards, 328 of those from rushing, while Mercer Island had just 185 yards, 136 passing and 49 rushing. The Islanders gave up 48 yards stemming from seven penalties, while Bellevue had three penalties, costing the team 19 yards.
Bellevue is now 9-0 this season, and earned the team’s fourth shutout of the season. Mercer Island is now 5-4 this year.
This Friday, Mercer Island will play its final game of the season, against West Seattle at home beginning at 7 p.m. in a crossover game with Metro.
