Former Mercer Island High School boys basketball coach Ed Pepple will be inducted into the Washington Sports Hall of Fame this weekend.
Pepple, the winningest basketball coach in Washington high school history, will be inducted during a ceremony prior to the Nov. 4 Seattle Seahawks game at Century Link Field.
Pepple had a high school record of 952-306, and coached for 52 years, 42 of them at Mercer Island High School. He helped lead the Islanders to the state title four times, in 1985, 1993, 1997 and 1999. Teams coached by Pepple finished second in state three times and won the KingCo championship 23 times. He retired from coaching in 2009.
Almost 50 players coached by him have gone on to play in college and two went to the NBA.
He was named the Washington State Coach of the Year seven times and was the national coach of the year in 1988. The gym at Mercer Island High School was dedication to Pepple and his wife Shirley in 2010.
This will be the sixth hall of fame induction for Pepple. He has also earned the honor from the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association, and the National High School Coaches Association.
Pepple himself play basketball at Lincoln High School, graduating in 1950, going on to play at Everett Community College and the University of Utah.
Pepple will be inducted this weekend along with former Seahawk Warren Moon.
