The Mercer Island girls soccer team kept their playoff dreams alive on Tuesday night, beating Bellevue in penalty kicks.
The Islanders jumped out to the early lead, when Kianna Chang scored in the fifth minute.
Head coach Terry Ryan said the team was playing “quite well” and had several scoring chances, but in the 50th minute Bellevue scored to tie the game 1-1.
The game remained tied and went into overtime, when Laura Harrison almost hit the mark to end the game, but just missed. The match went into penalty kicks after no goals were scored in overtime. Three from Mercer Island were able to score; Marissa Hammerstrom, Chang and Amanda Wall, while Bellevue had two shots go over the goal, Islander goalie Corey Goelz blocked as shot and another hit the bar. Mercer Island earned the win with a 2-1 final score.
The Islanders will host Interlake on Thursday night at 5 p.m. at Mercer Island High School.
If Mercer Island wins they will play a cross over game against a Metro team on Saturday with a chance to earn the final District 2 spot in the state tournament. A loss would end the season.Contact Mercer Island Reporter Reporter Megan Managan at email@example.com or (206) 232-1215 ext. 5054.
