Mercer Island beats Nathan Hale, advances to state tournament | Girls prep soccer
The Mercer Island girls soccer team survived a week including two shootout wins and beat Nathan Hale on Saturday afternoon to earn a spot in the 3A state tournament. The final score was 3-1 for the Islanders.
Playing at Ingraham High School, the Islanders hit the mark first when Laura Harrison scored, assisted by Kianna Chang in the 20th minute. Just 10 minutes later, Joelle Antilla scored, assisted by goalie Corey Goelz to lift the Islanders to the 2-0 lead.
After the break at halftime, Harrison scored her second goal of the game, this time assisted by Marissa Hammerstrom in the 60th minute.
Nathan Hale scored its only goal of the game in the 65th minute when Molly Hazelhurst scored an unassisted goal.
With the win, Mercer Island secured the No. 5 seed out of District 2 for the state tournament. The team will play the No. 2 team from District 5/8, which covers teams in the Yakima, Tri-Cities and Spokane areas. The first game of the state tournament for Mercer Island will likely take place in Eastern Washington on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
