Mercer Island advances to state quarterfinals | Boys water polo

The Mercer Island boys water polo team went into the state tournament as the No. 1 seed and won their first two games of the tournament, advancing to the quarterfinals on Friday, Nov. 9.

In the first games of the tournament, Mercer Island beat Bainbridge 26-6 and later beat Auburn Riverside 14-10.

With the wins, the Islanders earned a spot in the state quarterfinals on Friday afternoon at the pool at Curtis High School. Mercer Island will play Puyallup at 3 p.m. on Friday.

Against Auburn Riverside, Mercer Island led 3-1 and the end of the first quarter, but Auburn closed the gap in the second quarter, scoring five goals to the Islanders three. The score at halftime was tied 6-6.

After the break, Mercer Island scored four goals in the third, followed by another four in the final minutes to dominate the second half. The Islanders defense held Auburn to just five goals in the second half.

If Mercer Island beats Puyallup on Friday afternoon, the team will play the winner of the Curtis vs. Auburn Riverside game in the state semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 10. If Mercer Island loses to Puyallup, the team will play the loser of the Curtis, Auburn Riverside game on Friday night at 7:40 p.m.

All games take place at Curtis High School's pool.
