Mercer Island resident and runner Susan Empey finished in second place, while Islander Dyan Simon took fourth overall in the women’s marathon at the Seattle Marathon on Sunday, Nov. 25.
Empey finished the race, which crossed over the I-90 express lanes on Mercer Island, in two hours and 50 minutes, just behind Kristen Carter, who finished in 2:47.06. Simon’s time was 3:00.54.
“I felt very good about it,” Empey said. “Of course, I would have preferred first to second, but it was a nice race.”
Empey, who qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials earlier this year, did the first half of the Seattle race in 1:24.56, and the second 13.1 miles in 1:25.05. Carter shared the same first half time, but pulled away in the second portion of the race.
Empey and Simon were two of a group of three people who flew to New York to take part in the New York City Marathon earlier this month, only to have it canceled the day they arrived.
Empey said she and the others from the group decided to run the Seattle race to at least get one marathon in this year.
