Mercer Island beats Newport | Prep boys swimming

The Mercer Island boys swim and dive team notched a win over 4A rival Newport on Thursday, Dec. 6. The Islanders won 125-60.

In the 200 medley relay event, the Islanders team of Andrew Weiss, Andrew Fukuda, Duncan Koontz and Noah Dieparine won with a time of 1:46.16. The Islanders squad of Austin Ralph, Kalen Hopkins, Teddy Larkin and Matthew Nason took fourth place in 1:52.86.

Newport’s Ben Allen won the 200 freestyle in 1:48.17, while Ian Caldwell took second for Mercer Island in 1:52.92. David Conger took third in 1:54.39 and Tanner Martinez was fourth in 1:59.69.

Samuel Chong took second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:03.89. Panna was first for Newport in 2:01.98. Koontz finished third for Mercer Island, followed by Fukuda in fifth.

Weiss was first overall in the 50 freestyle event, finishing the race in 21.34, a state qualifying time. Karl MacLane was second in 22.91, followed by Samuel Peterson in 24.10 for fourth place.

Senior Cody Hall won the diving competition with 206 point. Connor Nielson was second overall, earning 161 points, while Doug Mclellan was fourth with 113.70 points.

Caldwell earned an individual win, earning the top spot in the 100 butterfly race, finishing in 1:00.31, followed by Ralph in second and MacLane in third.

Weiss won his second individual event of the meet, winning the 100 freestyle race in 47.52. Deiparine was second overall in 48.86, while Brandt Waesche finished in fourth. David Conger won the 500 freestyle event, winning in 4:59.22 to qualify for state. Koontz finished the event in third and Martinez was fourth.

Mercer Island’s Deiparine, Waesche, Caldwell and Weiss won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:33.40, a 4A state qualifying time. MacLane, Peterson, Harrison Leeds and Hanson took second for the Islanders in 1:35.49.

In the 100 backstroke, Newport’s Tyler Yee won in 57.05, while Will Dittig was second for the Knights in 57.07. Chong was third in 57.63, and Ralph was fourth, with Larkin in sixth.

Deiparine won the 100 breast stroke event, winning with a 1:03.20 time, followed by Fukuda in 1:05.64. Hopkins was fifth in 1:10.03.

The Islanders won the 400 freestyle relay with the group of Waesche, Peterson, Chong and Caldwell in 3:32.09, while Ralph, Conger, Hanson and Koontz finished in second in 3:34.94.
