Mercer Island loses first game of season in Arizona | Prep boys basketball

In their second game of the VisitMesa.com tournament in Arizona, the Mercer Island boys basketball team lost their first game of the season to St. John’s Jesuit, a team from Ohio. The final score was 62-61 in overtime.

Mercer Island held the advantage at the end of the first quarter, up 15-13, but St. John’s added 17 points in the second quarter to hold the lead at halftime. The Islander went up in the third quarter, but the game remained extremely close throughout the rest of the half, when the teams ended regulation tied at 54.

The Islanders struggled from the free throw line, while their opponent hit almost every extra point available, giving St. John’s the upper hand at the end of overtime.

Kaleb Warner scored 21 points during the game, while senior Joe Rasmussen added 18 points. Nick Nordale had nine points in the game, Jake Shaddle posted five for the team and Espen Platou and Will Taylor each had four points.

The team will play Gilbert  on Friday, Dec. 28 during the tournament.

The Islanders are now 8-1 this season.
