A new MIHS press box and concession stand opened during the Homecoming football game, which Mercer Island won over the Lake Washington Kangaroos, 34-3.

But the road ahead for the Islanders will not be so easy. Top-ranked Bellevue kept its winning streak intact in predictable fashion against 2A Sammamish, beating the Totems 49-0 after building a 42-0 lead at the half.

The Wolverines face KingCo’s other 2A squad next week at Lake Washington in a 7 p.m. start, while Sammamish will host Mercer Island, still in search of its first win since 2011.

Newport kept its record perfect on the season as well, thrashing Woodinville 40-9 to move to 3-0.

The Knights travel to 1-2 Issaquah, which lost to O’Dea, 51-26, this Friday in its divisional opener.

Interlake remained without a win on the 2013 campaign, falling 27-0 to Liberty in its third straight loss to open the season.

Hot Jamz Radio, the Mercer Island High School radio station, will be broadcasting all home Islander Football games this season. MIHS students will be bringing all the action live on KMIH at 88.9, 94.5 and TuneIn.com. The station will also be Podcasting the game on its website and re-airing the previous game on Saturday mornings at 8 a.m. During the game, fans can follow the action via Twitter at MercerIslandFB@mercerislandfb.

The Islanders will play the Sammamish Totems this week. The game begins at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, at Sammamish High School.
