The Islanders will be participating in the KingCo XC jamboree on Wednesday at Lake Sammamish State Park.
The Mercer Island High School cross country KingCo season began with a dual meet with Sammamish, held at Robinswood Park. Though the Islanders could not capture first in either the boys or girls races, their superior depth on the hilly course made the difference. The boys defeated the Totems by a score of 30-41. The Islanders were led by junior Nathan Gallatin (17:42) with scoring by Brett Bottomley, Ben Vandenbosch, Derek Sims and Dylan Lesko.
On the girls side, the depth once again proved decisive as the Islanders captured 12 of the top 14 spots. The Islanders prevailed by a score of 20-61. Lindy Elggren (20:37), Alida Scalzo, Cecelia Rosenman, Mallory Phillips and Sydney Zeldes all added to Mercer’s scoring totals.
The Islanders will host Interlake and Lake Washington on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 4 p.m. in Luther Burbank Park.
Mercer Island had 10 teams participate in the Tahoma Relays held in Maple Valley on Saturday, Sept. 7. Forty-two schools participated. MIHS captured fifth place overall. The relay team was comprised of Elle Green, Alida Scalzo, Eric Shulz, Nathan Gallatin and Nathan Cummings.
