Islanders beat Sammamish for first KingCo win | Prep wrestling

Mercer Island opened KingCo league competition Thursday, Dec. 12 beating Sammamish 57-24. The victory brought the Islanders' record to 1-0 in conference play and 5-2 on the year.

In what began as a back-and-forth affair, the Islanders tallied five straight wins to finish the match, including consecutive pins by Trevor Gullstad, Jake Pruchno and Mike Ong.

Kevin Pedersen won the 106 match by forfeit, as did Taylan Yuasa to win the 113 match, while Sammamish' Juan Quijada won the 120 match by forfeit.

In the 126 match, Luke Wilson won by a 10-4 decision over Rathtana Duong. Trevor Gullstad pinned Tristan Stayner to win the 132 match, Jake Pruchno pinned Christian Kopet to win the 138 match and Mike Ong pinned Will Switzer to win the 145 match. Kenji Walker won the 152 match by forfeit, as did Nic Meinzinger-Richards to take the 160 match.

Sammamish's James Tate pinned Teague Frazier to win the 170 match, while the Totems' Dawson Conway won the 182 match by forfeit. Evan Condon pinned Max Hummer to win the 195 match, Sammamish's Jake Johnson pinned Dylan Majewski to win the 220 match and Mercer Island's Cole Nielsen won the 285 match by forfeit.

Next up, the Islanders travel to Bonney Lake to compete in the Panther Invitational Saturday, Dec. 14 at Bonney Lake High School. The tournament will begin at 9 a.m.
