Mercer Island gymnastics get win over Liberty | Prep gymnastics

In its first home meet of the season, the Mercer Island gymnastics team beat the Liberty Patriots Thursday, Dec. 12 at Mercer Island High School.

The Islanders won with a team score of 156.25, scoring 41.45 on the vault, 30.8 on bars, 39.7 on the beam and 44.3 on the floor competition. The Patriots finished with a team score of 120.05. They scored 37.65 on the vault, 19.6 on bars, 28.3 on the beam and 34.5 on the floor competition.

Senior Emily Lightfoot won the all-around competition with a score of 32.5. Catherine Seifert placed second with a score of 31.85, and senior captain Tonayo Crow finished third with a score of 29.75. Stephanie Prince came in eighth place with a score of 17.45, and Aeon Gaines placed tenth with a score of 14.35.

In the bars competition, Crow won with a score of 6.9. Lightfoot took second with a score of 6.8, and Seifert tied with Liberty's Emily Culbertson to place third with a score of 6. Nikki Lim came in fourth with a score of 5.1 and Lilly Blakey placed fifth with a score of 4.7.

Melissa Wenzel won the beam event with a score of 9.3. Lightfoot placed second with a score of 8.6, and Seifert placed third with a score of 8.4. Liberty's Candace Baltazar took fourth with a score of 7.1, and Mercer Island's Aeon Gaines and Olivia Shen tied for fifth with a score of 6.7.

For the floor event, Stephanie Prince won with a score of 9.45. Seifert placed second with a score of 9.25, and Lightfoot finished third with a score of 8.7. Senior captain Cheyanne Lewis took fourth with a score of 8.6 and Crow placed fifth with a score of 8.3.

In the vault competition, Lightfoot won with a score of 8.4, while Crow came in second with a score of 8.35. Liberty's Emily Culbertson finished third with a score of 8.25. Seifert and Emma Young tied for fourth with a score of 8.2, and Prince finished fifth with a score of 8.

The Islanders travel to Sammamish High School for a conference matchup with the Totems Thursday, Dec. 19 before taking on Bainbridge at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20 at Bainbridge High School.
