Islanders beat Kangs | Prep girls basketball

The Mercer Island girls basketball team beat Lake Washington 58-49 Wednesday, Jan. 8 at Lake Washington High School. The win brought the Islanders' KingCo record to 3-2.

Mercer Island got started early, leading 13-6 after the first quarter and then outscoring the Kangs 19-5 in the second quarter to take a 21-point lead into halftime. Lake Washington surged in the second half with a 25-point third quarter, but the Islanders withstood to hold on for the win. Jess Blakeslee led the Islanders in scoring with 15 points, while Julia Blumenstein and Jamie Mounger each had 10.

Next for Mercer Island will be a conference matchup with rival Bellevue at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10 at Bellevue High School.
