Freshman trio push Islanders past Juanita | Prep wrestling

The freshman trio of Teague Frazier, Cole Nielson and Kevin Pedersen combined to score 18 points for the Mercer Island wrestling team as the Islanders beat Juanita High School 36-30 Thursday, Jan. 9 at Mercer Island High School. It was Mercer Island's second win in two nights.

Frazier pinned Brendan Frost to win the 182 match, while Pedersen and Nielson won the respective 106 and 285 matches by forfeit. Juanita's Perry Padilla won a 9-8 overtime decision over Taylan Yuasa to take the 126 match, while Mercer Island's Jake Pruchno pinned Tien Tran to win the 132 match and Trevor Gullstad pinned Shannon Smith to win the 138 match.

The Rebels scored several middleweight wins, as Juanita's Germain Madden pinned Kenji Walker to win the 145 match, Brent Patterson won by a 6-3 decision over Dominic Giampapa in the 152 match, Mason McDaniel pinned Nic Meinzinger-Richards in the 160 match and Pierce Belleman pinned Tanner Ranz to win the 170 match. Evan Condon won the 195 match by forfeit, and Juanita's Garrett Mitchell pinned Dylan Majewski to win the 220 match.

The Islanders continue their busy week competing at the Island Invitational at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11 at Bainbridge Island High School.
