Islanders place fifth at Island Invitational | Prep wrestling
The Mercer Island wrestling team traveled to the Bainbridge Island Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 11, taking fifth overall as a team against 11 other high schools.
Juniors Evan Condon (195) and Taylan Yuasa (113) took first place in their weight divisions. They also earned the Outstanding Tournament Wrestler Awards for the lightweight and heavyweight divisions, which is voted by coaches.
In the championship finals, Condon beat Brett Potter of Mountlake Terrace in a 15-4 decision. Yuasa beat Riley Riffe of Shelton by pin at 3:25 in the second period.
Senior Jake Pruchno (132) took home second place after losing a battle against Cameron Dubos from Bremerton in a 10-4 decision. Also moving on to the championship finals was freshman Kevin Pedersen (106), who narrowly lost 14-12 to Cruz Pedro-Alonzo of North Mason.
A trio of Islanders took fourth place, including junior Trevor Gullstad (132), junior Scott Lee (138) and senior Tanner Ranz (170).
Saturday's tournament capped a busy week for Mercer Island wrestling. The Islanders scored wins Wednesday against Lake Washington and Thursday against Juanita, with both meets taking place at Mercer Island High School.
Mercer Island will celebrate Senior Night at the team's last home meet of the season when they host the Liberty Patriots at 7:30 p.m Thursday, Jan. 16 at Mercer Island High School.
