Bellevue buzzer-beater sinks Islanders | Prep boys basketball

The Mercer Island boys basketball team lost a heartbreaker Tuesday night, as Bellevue's Zach Moore hit a deep 3-pointer at the buzzer to beat the Islanders 56-53 at Mercer Island High School. It was Mercer Island's first home loss of the season.

It was a spirited first half with Mercer Island celebrating senior night before the game, as well as the return of senior captain Chris Lawler after missing nine games with a high-ankle sprain. Kaleb Warner hit a shot at the end of the first to give Mercer Island a 19-15 lead after one and the Islanders took a 34-29 lead into halftime. In the third, a 3-pointer from Lawler gave the Islanders a 42-35 lead, but Bellevue responded scoring eight unanswered points to close the quarter ahead 43-42. The Islanders trailed 53-48 in the fourth, but a 3-pointer and two free throws from Warner tied the game at 53 with three seconds remaining. But that was enough time for Moore to get off a deep look to win the game.

The Islanders finished the regular season 11-3 in KingCo and 15-5 overall. The 3A KingCo all ready secured before the game, the win gave the Wolverines a 14-0 record in KingCo play and 17-2 overall. As the second-place team in KingCo, the Islanders will have a first-round bye in the KingCo tournament, which begins Saturday, Feb. 8 at Bellevue College.
