Mercer Island girls, boys advance | Prep basketball
Both the Mercer Island girls and boys basketball teams advanced to the championship round of the KingCo tournament, as both prevailed in their second-round games against Liberty High School Tuesday, Feb. 11.
Despite trailing 10-2 early in the second quarter, the Mercer Island girls made a run to cut the deficit to four to bring the score to 14-10 at the half. Mercer Island's offense woke up in the third quarter, with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Suri Johnson capping a 20-5 run to put the Islanders ahead 30-19. Withstanding the Liberty press in the fourth, the Islanders won 38-27.
It was more of a scare for the Mercer Island boys. Coming off a first-round bye, the Islanders jumped ahead to a 13-3 first quarter lead before the Patriots fought back to make it 21-15 at halftime. The Patriots continued to fight in the third, outscoring Mercer Island 16-7 to take a 31-28 lead. Points were hard to come by in a tight fourth quarter until a basket by Kaleb Warner and a late 3-pointer from Andrew Pickles put Mercer Island ahead 40-33. The Islanders survived, winning 46-36.
The KingCo tournament championships will be Thursday, Feb. 13 at Bellevue College, with the girls playing at 6:30 p.m. followed by the boys at 8:15 p.m.
