The Mercer Island girls golf team traveled to Snohomish to do something they have done all season — beat their league rivals.

The undefeated team added the 3A KingCo medalist meet championship on May 5 to its list. The Islanders won by 17 strokes, qualifying four players and one alternate for districts.

“Once the season ended we all kept practicing and didn’t let up,” said Kelly Ogishima, who shot an 82 for sixth place overall.

Islander Lindsay Chinn scored the highest for her team with a 77, good enough for third overall.

Islander Tracey Tomlinson also qualified and played in the district tournament Monday (after Reporter deadline) at Riverbend Golf Course in Kent.

Mercer Island’s Kirby Thornton tied for fourth overall with an 80, but was pulled from the district lineup late on Sunday night for undisclosed reasons.

The move by Thornton opened up a spot for Casey Smaley, who qualified for districts as an alternate.
