The Mercer Island girls soccer team finally stopped its long five-game winless streak and fall from the top of the 3A KingCo league with a 2-0 victory against Interlake on Tuesday. The win clinches a playoff spot for the team, which went without a win since Oct. 9.

Mercer Island got on the board just after halftime, as Tara Nielson found teammate Ellen Haas for the first score of the game. It was the Islanders’ first goal in over 240 minutes of play.

Mercer Island would get one more goal, as Rachel Pedreira assisted teammate Christina Mosnes during the 71st minute of the game.

The victory against Interlake (0-11-1, 3-12-1) finishes the Islanders’ regular season schedule with a 6-4-2 in-league record and 6-7-2 overall. The team finished third overall in KingCo, six points out of first place, a position it held with 5-0-1 record earlier this season.

Mercer Island played Bellevue during the first round of the postseason on Tuesday night at Mercer Island High School (after Reporter deadline).
