Country Club takes water polo title
The Mercer Island Country Club 14-and-under boys’ water polo team won the Midlakes Championship for the first time by beating the Mercerwood Shore Club, 18-16, on Aug. 17. The Country Club qualified for the finals by beating Phantom Lake 13-4 and Fairwood 10-6.
Last year, the Country Club team came in second and finished behind the Shore Club in the 2007 regular season standings. Both teams consisted of many players who played in the Junior Olympics. The Country Club players are: Ethan Hallowell, Henry Fox, Doug Mahony, Eric Benca, Duncan Howard, Daley Seaton, Andy Wingerson, Coach Kyle Rudolph, Kelly Crandall, Erin Crandall, Kenny Trowbridge and Peter Mahony.
Tolkin defends Tacoma title
Mercer Island High School senior Brian Tolkin won the Tacoma Junior Championship for the second year in a row. Tolkin scored a 68 during the first round, a 69 during the second round and a 73 during the final round to win the championship by 10 strokes for the second consecutive year.
According to the organizers, “only a couple of individuals in the last 50 years have repeated as champions.”
The Tacoma Junior Tournament is a three-day cumulative score event.
Tolkin decided to try and defend his title instead of playing in the Pacific Northwest Golf Association tournament in Idaho.
