Girls slam Totems

The Mercer Island girls basketball team made an emphatic statement that it is not among the cellar dwellers in 3A KingCo any more with a 74-30 drubbing of Sammamish Saturday night. But it is a long climb from the bottom to the top, as the team lost a close 47-44 game to Mount Si Friday and was blown out by Issaquah 66-51 on Jan. 17.

All three games had one important thing in common, as senior center Georgia Gier seemed to find her shooting touch down the stretch. Gier finished all three games in double figures, including 18 points against Issaquah, which is one of the best teams in the state.

Mercer Island stayed close to Issaquah throughout the game, but a 21-12 Eagle run during the final quarter all but ended the chance for an upset, as both Amanda Nield and Janelle Chow scored 12 points each for the Islanders.

The Islanders came out sluggish to start their game against Mount Si, as they found themselves down 34-21 at halftime. But physical defense and an aggressive attack on the Wildcats’ basket brought the Islander girls back into the game. Mercer Island held Mount Si to a season low four points during the third quarter. Gier finished with 13 points, Hannah Lilly with 12 and Nield scored 10.

Saturday, Chow was an offensive wrecking ball against Sammamish, scoring 20 points and leading the team to a much-needed win. It is the third time this season that Chow has reached or gone over the 20-point mark for a game. But the Islanders also did a good job of spreading the ball around, as Gier finished with 13 points and the team had nine players who scored during the game. The Islander domination was no more evident than the fact they scored in double figures in each quarter while the Totems failed to reach double figures on the scoreboard until halfway through the third quarter.

The win is also a step away from the close rivalry that the Mercer Island girls have had with Sammamish during head coach Jamie Prescott’s tenure. The teams will meet again during the regular-season finale Feb. 8 at Sammamish High School.

Mercer Island will travel to Liberty for its next game on Friday with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
