Yankees repeat as MI Little League Majors Champions

The Yankees, playing in the Mercer Island Majors division of Little League baseball, won their second consecutive Majors division championship on May 28 at the Lid Park, defeating the Tigers 3-0 in a repeat of last year’s championship game. The Majors division is the highest level of Little League baseball played on Mercer Island. Peter Welch and Daniel Sims combined for a two-hit shutout of a tough Tiger team. Welch pitched 5 2/3 innings and Sims came in for the save, recording the final out.

Sims made a number of acrobatic plays at shortstop and also had a triple. Ryan Perkinson had a key double in the second inning, scoring the Yankees’ first run. The Yankees, comprised of Mercer Island boys ranging in ages from 10 to 12, finished the season at 15-1.

Islanders place in Judo tournament

The following Mercer Island Judo Club students placed at the Western Washington University Judo Tournament held on June 7 in Bellingham, Wash.:

Kenji Walker, fourth place in ages 11-12 Jr. Boys Middleweight division.

Phil Frazier, first place in ages 13-14 Jr. Boys Heavyweight division.

Molly O’Callahan, third place in ages 15-17 Jr. Girls Lightweight division, and Molly O’Callahan, third place in Sr. Women’s Lightweight division.

Girls basketball takes title

MIHS girl’s basketball takes first place in the WTA second Annual Luau tournament, finishing undefeated, June 7-8. The Islanders first beat Jr. Cascades Blue, a top Canadian team, by two points, then beat club team South Sound Elite Red by nine points to take first in their pool. Mercer Island beat Seattle Prep by nine points. The championship game was against a very strong club team, Seattle Yes 2008, with the Islanders winning by one point. Mercer Island also took third place the weekend before at the Summer’s Edge tournament in Spokane.
